Explicit Dress In Canada’s Schools and Municipal Governance, with Fritz Radandt & Andrew DeBartolo

Recently, the City of Oakville in Ontario gained international attention when students from a high school there posted pictures of a shop teacher wearing oversized prosthetics breasts under a tight-fitted shirt in class. This is the most recent high-profile instance in the ongoing conversation about what is appropriate in school classrooms, and at what age.

When questioned on the situation, the Halton District School Board released a statement that they ensure a safe and inclusive environment, and that gender identity and expression are protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code. In response, a group of concerned citizens, including parents and grandparents, rallied at a nearby school to raise awareness on the issue.

The Oakville scenario, though definitely out of the norm, highlights a growing concern from some parents nationwide about what’s happening in some public schools. This is why, this fall, more and more parents and citizens in BC, Manitoba and Ontario are putting their names forward to be school board trustees and municipal councillors.
