Hard and it’s hard is an American traditional folk song. It was a big hit during the bluegrass and early country music era. I sing and play it on guitar using kind of a Carter scratch right hand technique after a short intro. Lyrics posted below if you want to sing along. Just jump in and hang on.

Hard and it’s hard - Traditional Lyrics

There is a place in this old town
And that’s where my true love hangs around
She takes other men right down on her knee
An tells them a tale that she won’t tell me

It’s hard and it’s hard ain’t it hard
To love one that never will love you
It’s hard ain’t it hard ain`t it hard great God
To love one that never will be true

First time I seen my true love
SHe was standing by my door
The last time I saw her false hearted face
She was laying down dead on the coolin’ board

It’s hard and it’s hard ain’t it hard
To love one that never will love you
It’s hard ain’t it hard ain`t it hard great God
To love one that never will be true

Don’t go to drinkin’ and to gambling
Don’t go there your sorrows to down
This hard-liquor place is a low-down disgrace
The meanest damn place in this town

It’s hard and it’s hard ain’t it hard
To love one that never will love you
It’s hard ain’t it hard ain`t it hard sweet Jesus
To love one that never will be true
