Mayor of Sivas, Hilmi Bilgin said Kangal dogs are in great demand in Africa because of their ability to protect livestock from lions. As is known, lions are one of the major threats to breeders in many countries on the African continent.

In an interview about Kangal with Hurriyet Daily recently, Bilgin said the city government has been working on various projects to raise and reproduce this particular species. "We have established a scientific center in the city. The priority is to protect Kangal, because these dogs are a universal asset," he said, as reported by Hurriyet Daily.

According to Bilgin, there is a huge demand for Kangal dogs from abroad, especially Africa.

"African people use the Kangal to protect their animals and livestock from lion attacks," he said. When asked about the procedure for sending the animal, he made sure it was done safely.

"The dogs were sent abroad through the district governor's office," he said. In Turkey, the Kangal shepherd dog is used to protect livestock from wolves and bears.
