Performance Notes:
Generations of American public television watchers will recognize this piece as the theme from "Masterpiece Theater" a television show which began broadcasting on PBS in 1971. The music is from a larger suite of music from Mouret. He was a well-known composer of his age, but among all the music he composed, this remains the best-known work (and for all but scholars and enthusiasts of the Baroque Era, his only known work). Originally scored an orchestra of oboes, trumpet, timpani, and strings, this setting is for solo trumpet and optional 2nd trumpet with keyboard.
With regard to ornamentation, the trills should begin on the upper neighbor, and trills should be kept within the time in which they are written. Two- and three-note appoggiaturas may be interpreted either before or during the beat. The two-note appoggiaturas can work well either on the downbeat or before the beat in bars 4, 12, and 28; however, with the extra ornamentation of the last statement of the melody, the last two iterations (bars 56 and 64 should be placed directly on the downbeat only. All three-note appoggiaturas, as seen in bars 6, 14, 30, 58, and 66, may be placed on or before the beat; but for clearest effect, are best placed directly on the downbeat.
