Immoral demands by Germany, Poland that Russia pay reparations for Ukraine

The demands by Berlin and Warsaw that Moscow pay reparations for Ukraine are immoral, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Sputnik radio on Wednesday.

"It was quite indecent and absolutely immoral of Poland and Germany to make such claims at a joint news conference demanding that Russia pay any reparations for a period in history. It is not for either Poland or Germany to demand," Zakharova said.

The Russian diplomat pointed to the colossal damage done by Germany to Russia in WWII, including 25 million human lives. "Half the country was destroyed, burnt or damaged," she remarked, adding that Russia could have done much more had it not had to recover from that.

Zakharova also recalled how much money and effort was spent by the Soviet Union to rebuild Poland and other Eastern European countries. Pieces of art from the Dresden Gallery were brought back to life by Moscow from ashes, she added.

Meanwhile, "these people, their descendants dare mention some reparations," she remonstrated. "Let me remind you that it was Germany and Poland and their foreign ministers who orchestrated coups in Ukraine. And it is Europe, the European Union and Washington-led European bureaucracy who directly caused the crisis," Zakharova concluded.
