DM 27-1: Fedora Dropping Proprietary Video Codecs
Wait, what? No more H.264, H.265, and VC-1 support for muh videos? Why? Concern over lawfare that could result from using these codecs without paying for them, which leaves anyone without a proprietary NVIDIA driver to support these codecs in the cold. Older systems may also have more problems.

I get why they chose to avoid rather than confront the entertainment industry over using their codecs in linux without paying royalties for it. It still sucks. Sorry, Fedora users. The thing is that where Fedora and Red Hat go, often FOSS seems to follow. Watch for this shift in other distros moving forward.

Just do it. If we allow there to be a “try” in our thoughts, then it introduces the possibility of failure, which will create space for that undesired end. If we only “do” and think in terms of “do” vs “try”, we will keep “doing” and learning until we become excellent at whatever it is. So quit “trying”, just “do” whatever it is. Thanks, Yoda.

DM 27-2: Spiral Linux Update

Debian based distro gets more usable with latest update to 11.5 Stable branch and some bug fixes for the desktop environments:
Cinnamon finally got Catfish search utility
Budgie got a missing appindicator applet for the system tray
GNOME fixed an install issue with calamares causing some systems to hang after install
MATE: Menu workarounds for some apps that couldn’t be launched due to lacking sudo privileges

Also disabled some bmp-based fonts to assist with rendering
updated to the 5.18 kernel, Firefox ESR 102.3, and added SecureBoot, though with some caveats.

DM 27-3: XeroLinux… Arch, Pretty in Purple

KDE Base on an Arch foundation, and the desktop layout apparently follows Hick’s Law, which relates to the number of stimuli and a person’s reaction time. So the layout seems to follow suit with MacOS, with a global menu on the top bar and a dock at the bottom of the screen. Personally, those things bother me, so I prefer a more traditional PC feel. Three things in their list of goodies stand out to me, though:
Synaptic on Arch
Flatseal flatpak GUI
XeroLinux Config tool (I believe that more distros should have tools like this, as Garuda does)

It looks interesting. If I had time, I would test it out…
