Archaeologists find 2,600-year-old-cheese inside ancient Egyptian tomb
Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered several blocks of white cheese dating back 2,600 years in an ancient tomb.
The expedition found several moulds of Halloumi inside clay pots that were inscribed with Demotic script at the Saqqara necropolis, according to reports
An analysis revealed the cheese dated back to the 26th and 27th dynasties, between 688 and 525 B.C.

Besides unearthing the clay pots containing cheese, the expedition found several other containers that are set to be opened soon.
The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Archeology, who led the expedition, said ancient Egyptians refereed to Halloumi cheese as 'Haram'. But the name changed to 'Haloum' during Coptic times and eventually became 'Halloumu cheese', said Dr. Mustafa Waziri.
You'd be surprised to know the cheese from the clay pots at the Saqqara necropolis isn't the oldest to be found to date. Back in 2018, researchers found a 'solidified whitish mass' in the tomb of Ptahmes.
The ministry of Tourism and Antiques had said: "It is noteworthy that the Egyptian archaeological mission started its work at the site since 2018, and through its last five excavation seasons, they have managed to uncover the unique tomb of the fifth family priest 'Wahati', as well as 7 rock tombs, including three modern state tombs and four tombs from the D Old Wullah, and cemetery front from the old country
