BRILLIANT NEW NYXI Joy Cons for Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED!
In this episode, we unbox and test out the NYXI Transparent Switch Joy-Cons for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED.
When playing the Nintendo Switch or the Switch OLED in handheld mode, I've always found the stock Joy-Cons to be far too small and thin for my personal taste. While other manufacturers have come out with replacement Joy-Cons, most notably the Hori Split Pad Pro, those Joy COn replacements can only be used when attached to your Switch. There's no wireless option for them whatsoever. The team over at NYXI gaming have sought to build a better mousetrap where this is concerned, and have released a set of transparent Joy-Cons that cannot only be used in handheld mode but also wirelessly as a pseudo-Pro Controller. They recently set us a set to take a look at, and they're pretty darn cool.
The overall design of the transparent Joy-Cons here is closer to Nintendo's Pro Controller than a true Joy-Con. They feature larger grips for better comfort and control while playing. NYXI also offers these in a number of different colors, but they sent us the transparent ones to check out here. I love things like this, where you can see the inner workings of an item, to me that's super cool.
In addition to giving you a larger overall grip when playing your Switch or Switch OLED, these also have a few additional features. As many third-party Joy-Cons have done in recent years, these include a programmable turbo function that can also be set for Auto-Fire. Pretty cool. They also include programmable back buttons, not a feature I will use personally but I know many people enjoy it. You can also tweak the intensity of the rumble, and finally, there's a set of LED lights around each analog stick. These can be toggled through a variety of different color options, and really help these stand out from the crowd.
Connecting these to your Switch is super easy, just slide them in the rails and you're good to go. In the hand, they are definitely larger than the original Nintendo Joy-Cons, and that could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your personal preferences. They are definitely more substantial in the hand, so if you need something with a larger overall surface area these will be the way for you to go.
Connecting to my Switch and playing in handheld mode, this felt terrific. I was able to pull off all of the moves in Street Fighter exceptionally well, a tough test for other controllers. I was also very impressed with the rapid-fire and Auto-Fire modes that this offered, especially for shooters. I will say I felt like I had an unfair advantage going through and playing Star Fox utilizing the turbo. One thing that this removed for me, however, which the charge shot in Star Fox 64. This is something I will definitely have to evaluate which is more important for me to have.
I know many people will ask how these compare to the Hori Split Pad Pro, and it is a fair question. The biggest advantage of these to me is the fact that you can use them with the included joiner as a more traditional Pro-style controller. You can't do that out of the box with a Split Pad, you need an additional accessory to be able to do that which sucks. This works beautifully as a standalone controller, which adds even more value to what you are getting.
Why it RoX:
- Reasonably priced
- Available in a variety of different colors
- I love the LED lights
- Turbo and Auto fire modes
- Can be used as a Pro Controller in addition to being used on the Switch
- I'm a sucker for the transparent design of these
- Terrific battery life
What could be improved:
- The back buttons don't do much for me
- The clear case is a little bit on the slippery side
- No Amiibo support
Should you buy one?
The comparison to the Split Pad Pro is expected, however, I believe these are a much more capable and complete solution. The fact that the Split Pad Pro cannot be used wirelessly off of the system just reduces their overall value to me. Conversely, the fact that the NYXI controllers can be used off of the system provides even more value. When you factor in other benefits such as the LED lights, programmable turbo and Auto-Fire modes, and back buttons, these are some of the best options out there when it comes to third-party replacement Joy-Cons.
