When did the left stop defending the arts (referring to Jerry Sadowitz cancelled comedy gig)

As a child in the 70’s, it felt like nothing could be considered worse and nothing close to being a Nazi, then having art banned. It would be often defended by those on the left, and to ban something was seen and mocked as right wing or/and religious.

Mary Whitehouse was mocked for her constant demands. This is not to say she did not have valid points, such as having certain content put on TV later at night so in theory children could not see. But like we see with left wing middle class today, she appeared to come up with more and more silly things to stay relevant in the news. From what I remember she started to find children’s TV shows offensive.

Today Mary Whitehouse seems mild next to those who are into the religion of the left wing today. Many TV shows and one suspects films and book, are cancelled, edited/censored or have so called trigger warnings on them.

At one stage the left believed in art that challenged people, even if it was offensive. The result was great art. The Young Ones (about 1982) was fantastic, yet many involved seemed to be left wing. Today the left wing produce bland dull rubbish, that ticks boxes and ensures no offence. So bland that one wonders if Mary Whitehouse would have even wanted the shows a bit ruder.

Today it seems that the left now see themselves as people who need to sensor art, and see nothing wrong with preventing artists perform such as Jerry Sadowitz and Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown by councils. Wy would you cancel them as if they offend you, then presumably you would not see them.

One suspects that years ago, other artists would be outraged by seeing fellow artists being censored. But today, most seem to stay silent, pretending it does not happen. Presumably fearing if they speak out, they too will be accused of not having the correct thoughts, and be also banned.

And so those who claim to be against fascists, move further and further to a new fascist state.
