Mesa, Arizona - The Mesa Police Department has charged 21-year-old Abdul Basit Ishan for his involvement in a home invasion burglary that escalated into a barricade situation with police and resulted in officers shooting the suspect on August 22, 2022. The shooting occurred near Country Club and Rio Salado Parkway in Mesa. Police said around 11:30 p.m., officers received a 911 call from a woman who said she returned home and noticed her front door was broken. The woman said she heard someone inside her house, so she backed out and called the police. Mesa PD said when officers arrived, the suspect ran out of the house, jumped a wall, and attempted to hide on a patio of a nearby apartment. Police say, after a short time, Ishan jumped another wall and hid inside a storage shed. Mesa police said they noticed he appeared to be holding a handgun. When officers attempted to approach the shed, several rounds were fired from the shed in their direction. Police said after several hours of trying to get Ishan to come out, a robot and drone were deployed. Mesa PD says that Ishan fired additional shots at both devices. Less lethal measures were deployed, and when the suspect began to exit the shed, police say the officer-involved shooting occurred. After the shooting, officers took him into custody. Police say life-saving measures were administered, and he was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He faces over two dozen charges stemming from the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree burglary, according to officials. No officers or citizens were injured in this incident.
