Snakebite by extremely dangerous lancehead viper

A lancehead viper's bite can be lethal. A number of the most poisonous snakes in Central and South America belong to this family, and several of their species have venom that can interfere with blood coagulation, result in hemorrhage, strokes, and kidney failure.

A structural investigation of the glycans that change the venom proteins in many species of lance heads was performed by researchers at Brazil's largest anti-venom manufacturer. The report provides information on how different species' venoms differ as well as on the solubility and stability of harmful proteins. Researchers are attempting to relate the glycan structures to the proteins that they change.
