Peanut Butter Sandwich - By Jenna Karl.

As an artist, I always draw what inspires me and the last few years has really impacted my life and my perception of society. Before I explain this piece, I want to state that I do not advocate for or against any type of medical procedure you would like to have but I do advocate for freedom of choice. My inspiration for this particular piece comes after a year of recovery from several heart conditions and other ailments that were caused by a medical procedure that my body reacted to in a very aggressive and negative way. The reason I felt compelled to draw this is because of the lack of conversation around it and the lack of empathy for those who perhaps might be in a similar situation. We really have no right to judge someone’s choices when we do not know them, when we do not know their medical history or their story. We cannot simply say, just get a medical treatment and continue to get medical treatments when we do not know what the consequences are for that individual. If a certain medical treatment has the potential to cause serious harm then we must be empathetic and aware that there cannot be and will never be one cure for all. All of us are different and unique. If peanut butter sandwiches were the cure for the common cold and every time you ate a peanut butter sandwich you went into anaphylactic shock, would you want to eat one every six months knowing that it may or may not kill you? What if you couldn’t be exempt from eating peanut butter sandwiches and people told you that you were selfish for not eating them, that you couldn’t be around your family or be employed anymore because of your refusal to eat them? How would you feel? What would you do? Is your life worth less because you are allergic to a medication? Before you judge, talk, have a conversation be open to others. Every medication has side effects. I hope you like this drawing and I hope I have inspired you.
