First Polio Case In The United States In Nearly A Decade In New York State 😱

An unvaccinated person from Rockland County, New York, has been diagnosed with polio. Making this the first case identified in the United States in nearly a decade.

According to reports the 20-year-old began experiencing weakness and paralysis nearly a month ago. Officials say that it appears the patient had a vaccine-derived strain of the virus, possibly from someone who got a live vaccine not offered in the U.S..

Polio is a virus that spreads mostly from person to person or through contaminated water. The disease can infect a person’s spinal cord, causing paralysis and possibly permanent disability and death.

Although the person is no longer considered contagious, investigators are working to figure out how the infection occurred, and whether other people have been exposed to the virus.

While the origins of the polio case are still being investigated, the 20-year-old man had traveled to Poland and Hungary earlier this year and was hospitalised in June, according to a public health official close to the investigation.
