These large carnivores are powerfully built with long bodies, relatively short legs and broad heads. There are nine subspecies, distinguished by unique fur features. Its fur varies from tawny or pale yellow in warm, dry habitats to reddish orange in dense forests. Their fur is covered with dark, irregular patches called rosettes. These spots are circular in East African leopards, but square in South African leopards.
