Foreign mercenaries, before and after

I can understand Russians and Ukrainians, they live there. But I don’t really understand foreigners wanting to die for a country that is not even their own. What attracted them? The money? The adrenaline? A death impulse? Misguided idealism? The search for a cause? Tired of playing Call of Duty? Or were they simply not the brightest bulbs around?
