Abandoned Mountain Top Amusement Park
RiP travels to this abandoned mountain top theme park to relive a childhood memory. A long time ago RiP and his family visited this theme park while on vacation. There was advertisements and brochures all over the place for this place. In the video he will point out key memories that he experienced. RiP has even added some short video clips of when this theme park was in operation.
After visiting some ghost towns in the old West a business man was inspired to build a Western theme park. There was a popular fascination with the old West at that time. Construction began in September of 1960 and completed in May of 1961. With the help of over two hundred workers forty replica buildings were built. There were mini towns: Indian Village, Mountain Town, and Mining Town. The theme park was a hit, reaching over 500,000 visitors annually in the 1970's. Over time the fascination of the old West slowly faded away which lead to a decline in visitors. It got to the point that the revenue was not enough to support the maintenance needs for the rides. Towards the end it was not uncommon for rides to be shut down or not even be open. In July of 2002 a chain on the chairlift that brought visitors to the top of the mountain broke. This left visitors stuck in the July heat for hours. After that season the park shut down. After a new owner the park re-opened but only lasted for three seasons because of a bad recession.
Millions of dollars has been invested to bring back this mountain top amusement park to life. A little over a decade ago there was a major mud slide that caused residents around the theme park to be evacuated. One of the major issues is that no one has been able to find a way to bring fresh water to the top of the mountain. Another major issue is that there is stiff competition of other amusement attractions in the region. A final major issue is the lack of infrastructure in the area to be able to handle the influx of visitors and draw people away from the competition.
Sadly this past spring one of the long time owners passed away. There was high hopes that this latest attempt to re-open the amusement park was going to be successful. The plan was to restore the base of the mountain and work up to the top. It was estimated that it was going to cost over a hundred million dollars to restore the amusement park. Now we wait to see what the fate is for this mountain top amusement park.
