I think we all know intuitively that animals are pretty special. There is a wide body of research on the physiological impact of being around animals including cats, dogs and horses.

I’ve talked to some people who suffer from loneliness and depression and being around animals whether you can have one in the home or volunteer at a shelter is a great way to feel better.

According to an NIH article:

"Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood."

AND...

"Animals can serve as a source of comfort and support. Therapy dogs are especially good at this. They’re sometimes brought into hospitals or nursing homes to help reduce patients’ stress and anxiety."
