The dilemma of power and responsibility: In search of Existential wisdom

It is an incongruity of modern existence that as we exercise greater power over our environment we exercise less and less responsibility for our selves, our communities and the world in which we exist. This is a dilemma of power and responsibility, and it is one of the central characteristics of our times.

At the heart of this dilemma is a terrible confusion about what it means to be a human being. This confusion is evident in the crises of meaning surrounding the self, community, and human history.

An examination of these crises sets the stage for a reflection on "existential wisdom." Existential wisdom emerges when we accept the fundamental paradoxes, ambiguities, and irreconcilable polarities of human existence. Existential wisdom is like a light in the darkness. It allows us to see more clearly. When combined with existential courage existential wisdom helps us live more vital, responsible lives and makes it less likely that we abuse the tremendous powers that we possess.

Educational Objectives: 1) ... Will be able to distinguish between problems and existential predicaments. 2) ... will understand how existential wisdom can help them and their clients identify and cope with life¹s predicaments. 3) ... Will understand that purely analytic, problem solving techniques are inadequate when addressing life¹s predicaments. 4) ... Will be more sensitive to issues of power and responsibility as they apply to the helper-client relationship.
