Should I start selling on Amazon Canada?

Sellers often ask me: "Should I start selling on Amazon Canada?"

Short answer: no.

Not until you max out the US marketplace. I am a fan of maximizing your potential on Amazon.com prior to branching out. Launch a bunch of products, optimize all listings, run ads on all, really go at it. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett were both asked what the most important trait was in ensuring success. ​​They both said "focus".

And here, check out these numbers:

America has a population of 329 million.
Canada has a population of 38 million

(Canada has the population of California, approximately)

Here's what I've seen.

​​When US sellers expand to Canada and get up and running, Canadian sales are about 10-15% of the US market. The population numbers would predict this.

Don't get me wrong...

It'll be worth it one day.

If you're doing $10k/mo on Amazon.com (US) right now, an additional $1k/mo isn't very meaningful. But by the time you hit $100k/mo on Amazon.com (US), the additional $10k/mo from Canada is well worth the trouble of setting things up up north.

That's my take.
