In the clearest hint of succession planning, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani carved out definite roles for his three children at the annual meeting of the $220 billion retail and refining conglomerate in August. We gave each one a fixed role.
Mr. Ambani's older twins, Akash and Isha Ambani, will manage the telecommunications and retail operations of Reliance Industries. Guides his youngest son, Anant, as he prepares to deal with the new energies.
India's most anticipated management turnover - Reliance is one of India's most valuable companies by market valuation .The details of the upcoming wealth transfer are currently vague and largely speculative.
What is clear, however, is Ambani's desire to avoid repeating history. Twenty years ago, after his father died without leaving a will, he engaged in a bitter inheritance dispute with his younger brother. Isha Ambani's leadership role is in stark contrast to the more peripheral roles played by other women in her family in core businesses.
Over the past two decades, there has been a generational shift in the number of prominent Indian businesswoman families who bring women into their corner offices, but analysts say there is still a long way to go.
In his speech, Ambani said of the leadership roles his three children have taken on, he said, "You stand out from the crowd in a young team of leaders and professionals who are already doing amazing things at Reliance." It is a unique presence,” he said.
Isha Ambani's rise as an "equal" to her siblings is very different from her older female relatives. Her aunt was married to another entrepreneurial family long before an inheritance dispute split the Ambani family.
But Ms Ambani, a Yale graduate who worked at the consulting giant McKinsey, has been groomed to join the Reliance empire.
