2. A mess of twisted metal and snapped cables is all that remains of a bridge linking picturesque tourism spots in Taiwan's south-east after a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck on Sunday.

The nearly 600-metre Gaoliao Bridge in Yuli was one of four river crossings in the nation's south-eastern region to topple, trapping people after the quake hit.

Video shared by those stranded on one of the few sections of the roadway left standing showed much of it lying in the water and grassland below.

Sunday's earthquake came just hours after a magnitude-6.4 tremor hit the same area on Saturday night.

The quakes left train carriages derailed, residents including a mother and child trapped inside a collapsed building, and more than 140 people injured.

Hundreds more waited to be rescued from mountain towns, where damaged roads meant they were almost entirely cut off.
