A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 has struck western Mexico, with shaking felt as far away as Mexico City, local officials and witnesses say. There are conflicting reports about the possibility of a tsunami.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:05 p.m. local time on Monday, was centered about 46 kilometers southeast of La Placita de Morelos in the state of Michoacбn. It struck at a depth of 15 kilometers, which is very shallow.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, up from an earlier estimate of 7.5. Mexico’s seismological agency put the magnitude lower, at 7.4.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami alert for nearby coastlines, but the Mexican government disputed this, saying sea level changes are not expected due to the location of the epicenter.

Residents near the epicenter reported strong shaking which lasted at least 20 seconds and there were early reports of structural damage, but the extent was not immediately clear. It’s unknown if anyone was injured.

Buildings also shook in Mexico City, prompting residents to run into the streets, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries in the nation’s capital, Governor Claudia Sheinbaum said.

Mexico sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to large earthquakes.
