Houston PD fatally shoots man armed with a shotgun after he kills 2 tenants, sets apartment on fire

Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed suspect by an HPD officer at 5757 Holly Street about 1:15 a.m. on Sunday (August 28).

The suspect is identified as Roy Cravin, 54.

HPD Officer S. Mills, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in tis incident. Officer Mills was sworn in as an officer in December 2015 and is assigned to the South Gessner Patrol Division.

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant E. Wohlgemuth and Detectives C. Walker, D. Escobar, J. Kosler and N. Alvarado reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired at a residence at 8020 Dunlap Street. Officers arrived and found a residence at 5757 Holly Street on fire and Houston Fire Department emergency personnel on scene. According to witnesses, a male suspect dressed in dark clothing was carrying a shotgun and shooting at people at the location.

Officers located the suspect lying prone on the ground next to the building across the street from the residence and gave him verbal commands to show his hands. The suspect instead pointed his shotgun at HPD officers. Fearing for his life, Officer Mills discharged his duty weapon at the suspect, who was struck by the gunfire. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers located two deceased adult males inside the residence. Both are believed to have been shot by the suspect. Their identities are pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Four additional adult males, three with gunshot wounds and one with minor injuries, were also transported to area hospitals. One gunshot wound victim was pronounced deceased. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The other three males were treated for their injuries and are expected to survive.
