“We will show what capitalism does to ordinary working people” - CWU London region leader

Striking Post office workers demand increase in wages to counter the rise in cost of living, and record inflation in the UK and Britian - as a consequence of global capitalist crisis and NATOs war on Russia.

In this video, a Leader of the London region of the CWU delivers a speech at mount pleasant sporting office on August 26th 2022.

He states that organised workers in the trade union movement “will lead the fightback” and that the strike will show ordinary workers “what capitalism does to them”, and that “organised labour is alive and well”.

But when Queen Elizabeth died and Charles III was coronated, just three weeks later, the TUC called off its congress, strikes were abandoned and class collaboration was the order of the day.

CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said: “Following the very sad news of the passing of the Queen, and out of respect for her service to the country and her family, the union has decided to call off tomorrow’s planned strike action.” (https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/people/postal-strikes-sheffield-cwu-calls-of-fridays-strike-action-out-of-respect-for-queen-elizabeth-ii-3837192?amp)

The cosy relationship between organised trade unionism and the Labour Party, and through them the British Imperialist state of the monopoly capitalists, remains the achilles heel of the British Working class.

Only by discarding this servility and finding their own political voice and independence can workers hope to break the chains of their wage-slavery.

Royal Mail management response to suspension of strike action was enough to turn the stomach of any worker facing 10-20% real terms wage cuts: https://cwue5.org/2022/09/08/royal-mail-statement-on-cwu-decision-to-cancel-current-strike-action/
