Self-Deception as a Sin of Omission

Classic theories of self-deception and repression presume that self-deceptive individuals know the truth, but somehow hide it from themselves. There are a host of philosophical and psychological problems associated with such presumption. Self-deception is much better conceptualized as voluntary failure of effortful and anxiety-provoking exploration, after exposure to anomaly, or after receipt of an emotionally tagged error message. This presentation will offer a theoretical account of such failure, grounded in neuropsychology, assessed experimentally, and buttressed by examples from mythology.

Educational Objectives:
1) Examine the perspective that self-deception is a voluntary failure of effortful and anxiety-provoking exploration, following the exposure to anomaly, or after receipt of an emotionally tagged error message.
2) Understand the neuropsychology involved in such a failure, exploring experimental evidence and examples from mythology.
