Metformin is the most prescribed pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes. The FDA approved metformin as a treatment for type 2 diabetes in 1994. It is a drug that addresses the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes, not just the symptoms. It lowers blood sugar levels, reduces insulin resistance, and improves lipid levels in patients who have both type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. Metformin is the most popular drug prescribed by doctors to treat type 2 diabetes. It’s also been one of the most popular longevity drugs. Metformin is a drug that makes cells more
sensitive to insulin. Metformin may have anti-aging properties. It may help people live longer and reduce the chances of getting cancer or heart disease. Actually, it’s been shown to reduce the
risk of mortality from all causes, not just heart disease or cancer. Its usage for diabetes purposes is well studied, but not its effects on longevity. It has been found to greatly increase the lifespan of animals and reduce their risk of cancer. Metformin inhibits an enzyme found in both animal and human cells called AMP-dependent kinase (AMPK). The drug has been shown to reduce the rate
of aging in mice by improving their cardiovascular health. The research on metformin for longevity in humans is still ongoing, but we might soon know more. Researchers have found that Metformin may reduce the risk for age-related diseases, cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. Metformin can help improve lifespan for those who are already healthy, but it cannot turn unhealthy people into healthy individuals. Metformin is most effective when taken over a long period of time with lifestyle changes such as exercise and healthy eating habits. As the population ages, more and more people are turning to metformin as an anti-aging drug. A study of nearly 2,000 participants found that those who took metformin were on average 5 years younger than those who did not take the drug. Another study with mice showed that those taking metformin lived longer than those not on it. The earliest research on metformin and longevity has been conducted in the lab of Dr. Rafael de Cabo at the National Institute on Aging. The subjects of this research were given metformin or a placebo pill for six weeks, and then underwent a period of caloric restriction. Metformin enabled people to live about 30% longer than those who did not take the drug, even when they were also limiting their food intake so that they lost 20% of their body weight over six months.
There are some risks associated with taking metformin, such as lactic acidosis and gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and diarrhea. There are also indications of possible negative effects, on some sports performance, in professional athletes, for those taking this drug. A new study has found that taking the drug, merformin, may suppress muscle power and endurance-a significant factor in high-level sports competition. It's important to talk to your doctor or other professional before beginning any sort of supplementation or treatments.
