ROYAL FAVOURITE FIGURES | QUEEN ELIZABETH LEGIT? | CONTROVERSY

As the British Commonwealth mourns the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, a scarce collectible reminds us that the late queen was a figure of some controversy when she came to the throne in 1953.

Minton's Queen's Beasts were more than a mere miniaturization of the 6' statues she strode between on her march into Westminster Abbey that fateful day. Each creature was a statement of her direct bloodline from Henry VII and Edward III, calculated to remind anyone arguing her succession that she was, through historical fate, the rightful Monarch of the British Empire, at a time when things seemed most dire in the aftermath of WWII.

Her succession was not always so certain. Her uncle Edward VII's Abdication during her childhood and her father's now legendary awkwardness in an era of depression, war and loss of Empire gave wags reason to publicly doubt the new Queen's readiness to take on such a large job. Having a complete set of the Queen's Beasts was a statement that you fully supported the Queen as the rightful head of the Monarchy, and they were expensive and scarce when new.
