Basics 18 Salvation continued...Eternal Security

We'll finish up eternal security today. Then press on next week to the Three Tenses of Salvation or Salvation in Three Time Zones. That lesson will deal with salvation from the penalty of sin (Past), salvation from the power of sin (Present), and salvation from the presence of sin (Future). It is very important to note in a context which of the three salvations is being referred to. Otherwise people think they may not really be saved or they can lose their salvation. However, understood properly, you can be saved from the penalty of sin and have eternal security and still need to be saved from the power and presence of sin. This is actually very straightforward and easy. We'll get to all of it then, but for those who are interested, here's a little homework in advance.

In James 2:14, which tense of salvation is in view? Is this talking about being saved from the penalty of sin? How could it in light of 1:18? Also, immediately after 1:18, what salvation is in view in 1:21? These are actually very easy questions when you understand salvation is in three time zones! It also helps if you understand the argument James is making all the way through his letter. That always sheds tremendous light, but what most people do is take a verse out of context without looking at or understanding the argument. The reason they don't take the time to do that is because it is extremely laborious. It can take me 30-40 hours to deal with all the historical background and word usage to unwind the argument that is being made. This work is worth it in every respect. So much becomes clear.

"A text taken out of context is a pre-text, not a proof-text."
