In this episode, Tyler hikes along the ridgeline back up and popped out into this nice golf-course-looking grass, hoping to run into an elk. He shows a big old moose down by the lake.

When traveling just along the inside of these trees, prey usually comes over here where there's grass. Moreover, if you can stay inside the shadow on the tree line, you can see anything silhouetted on the other side. Your goal is not to be detected by your prey, whether it be through smell or sound.

Something to think about when it comes to how you dress, whether or not you want to go full camouflage for hunting, is the topography of where you’re hunting or navigating. For example, in Tyler’s case, there's a lake and some super steep or highly connected topographical lines that let him know I'm going to climb right up a mountain, so if I continue on my path and go up around this side, it might be less steep, but it's going to go right up this mountain, right down that mountain.
If you find yourself lost in an area by a big lake with a mountain to the north, then maybe it's okay to wear camouflage.

Once you've got a general idea of where you are, you need to figure out how to get out. So, take a map of the local area, sit it out, find the prominent known points, and figure out where they are in relation to you. Usually, maps are oriented north, so it can be read as north, south, east, or west. Once you've figured that out, twist your map until it looks like the real world.

Walk to one of those linear things on the map, like a train track, a road, or a trail, and handrail that road to the right or left until I get to the location that you’re looking for. Try to find yourself on maps just using the real world, using what you observe and what you see, and your map reading and navigation skills will substantially increase almost instantaneously.
