According to the Bible (Exodus 5:7-8)

The Egyptian king is the main antagonist in the Exodus tale. The pharaoh of Moses, unlike the pharaoh who knew Joseph, is ruthless and spiteful. When Moses requests Pharaoh to free the Israelites, he makes the slaves work harder, denying them straw to build sun-dried mud bricks, despite the fact that the daily quota of completed bricks must stay constant.

The identification of Pharaoh in the Moses account has been hotly discussed, although many experts believe that Exodus is referring to King Ramses II. According to the Bible, the Israelites were to build "supply towns, Pithom and Ramses, for Pharaoh." Egyptian sources reveal that the 19th dynasty's monarchs (about 1293-1185 BCE) conducted a large military effort in the Levant. As part of this endeavour, King Seti I (about 1290-1279 BCE) constructed a new garri­son city, which his successor, Ramses II (around 1279-1213 BCE), eventually named Pi-Ramesses. Ramses II also constructed Per Atum, a second city devoted to his personal patron, Atum. These two cities might be the biblical Ramses and Pithom.

The Bible contains no information on the pharaoh against whom Moses is said to have fought. During the first millennium BCE, when the Exodus account was initially penned, the tradents simply did not know the names of any Bronze Age pharaohs.

However, a new study by Egyptologists and Biblical scholars Manfred Görg, Peter van der Veen, and Christoffer Theis reveals that Israel may have been mentioned much earlier in the Egyptian record. Manfred Görg uncovered a shattered statue pedestal bearing hieroglyphic name rings in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin and suggests that one of the name rings should be interpreted as "Israel" after researching it with colleagues Peter van der Veen and Christoffer Theis. Because of minor differences, not all experts agree with their interpretation.
Despite discrepancies in spelling, Görg, van der Veen, and Theis present compelling reasons, including parallels in the Merneptah Stele itself. This newly discovered inscription was discovered around 1400 B.C.E., approximately 200 years before the Merneptah Stele. If Görg, van der Veen, and Theis are correct, their finding will give new insight on ancient Israel's origins.
