The great Russian empress was born on April 21, 1729 in Germany, in the small provincial town of Stettin. Her parents were Christian Augustus of Anhalt-Tserbst and Johanna Elisabeth. It was a very generous, but not very wealthy family, which, however, was related to the kings themselves. Barely three years old, the girl had already begun negotiations on marriage broker Sophia Frederica (first name of the Empress) to the future Russian monarch Peter III.
