If you followed our Coutts Blockade coverage, you might remember Alex Van Herk.
He was one of the many participants at that peaceful protest against vaccine mandates, which forced the lifting of provincial restrictions and Jason Kenney to step down as UCP leader and Alberta’s premier.
Alex was also on the scene when protesters took down the fences barricading GraceLife Church, put up to enforce COVID measures limiting indoor gatherings that GraceLife congregants refused to abide by.
The GraceLife incident occurred just over a year ago, but it was only on August 25 of this year that a tactical police force was sent to execute the warrant. After speaking with those in charge, Alex willfully submitted himself to the RCMP Fort Macleod detachment to sign conditions of release later in the day.
But because he was involved in the Coutts Blockade, the Crown attempted to force Alex into a no-communication condition with others who were there, including one of his lifelong friends. This led to an hours-long impasse between Alex and the police to have that condition removed.
Once word spread that Alex had been taken into custody, a massive crowd showed up outside the RCMP detachment to show their support.
Alex held the line and refused to sign those conditions inside the RCMP detachment, while the crowd was growing outside. The Crown eventually relented and decided to drop the condition and let Alex go!
His legal counsel — crowdfunded through The Democracy Fund — said that “Alex got released because he signed his appearance and promise to appear notices.”
According to Alex, if not for the support group, he would have remained in Lethbridge Remand.
