Switch vs Switch OLED - Nintendo Changed the Size of the Switch Box?
In this #YouTube #Short episode, we compare the size of the boxes from the original Nintendo switch to the just-launched Nintendo Switch OLED.
In March of 2017, Nintendo launched its most unique console, the Nintendo Switch. Designed to be both a hybrid home and portable console, the Switch has gone on to do massive things over the years. Since its launch, Nintendo has released some minor updates with more battery-efficient hardware, different colors, and more. The biggest revision came in October of 2021 with the Switch OLED, featuring a larger display, updated dock with built-in Ethernet support, Just to name a few things. One of the things I did not expect was a difference in the size of the box.
To date, every box for the Nintendo Switch, regardless of variation, has been the same size. It may have had different copy on it, different photos, but the box was physically the same size. That is not the case with the Nintendo Switch OLED, which I did not expect. While the OLED display and dock are slightly bigger than the original, I would estimate the box is approximately 20% smaller than the original. This doesn't change the performance of the system at all, but it is one of those things that is interesting to see how Nintendo was able to repack and reorganize things to take up even less shelf space.
Did you happen to get your hands on a Nintendo switch OLED? Did you pick up the one with the red and blue joy-cons? Or the white ones like I did? Let me know which system you purchased in the comments below.
About the Switch OLED:
More of a derivative design than innovative, the Switch OLED features a larger 7-inch OLED display, an upgrade from the original model's 6.2 inch LCD display. The Switch OLED also includes new enhanced speakers for better sound in handheld mode as well. Additionally, while this is more for tabletop mode than handheld mode but the Switch OLED has a completely new kickstand design. Similar to what Microsoft has created for the Surface line of tablets, the entire lower half of the Switch OLED folds out to provide better support. This looks to be a huge improvement over the original.
Nintendo has also designed a new dock with additional features. An integrated ethernet port is a welcome addition and addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the original Switch, especially for those who have spotty Wi-Fi. It almost appears as though the Switch logo on the front of this new dock lights up, but that could simply be for marketing in the preview video.
To help you with saving to your Switch OLED, the onboard storage has been doubled, from 32GB to 64 GB. This still is not enough in my opinion, and there's little reason why this should not have 512 gigs or higher of onboard memory. Thankfully you should still be able to use a Micro SD card for additional storage. Word is that the CPU, GPU, and battery are unchanged from the original 2017 model. This is a huge disappointment to hear that there are no spec increases to reduce load times or improve the performance. Finally, the output resolutions are also unchanged from the original launch models at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode.
Many have speculated regarding the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch and what it may have, and I don't think many anticipated that we would basically be getting simply a new dock, OLED display, and more storage. At least initially, I am underwhelmed and disappointed. We shall see if there is yet another new Switch somewhere down the pipeline, but I myself kind of doubt it.
