These Joy-Cons are (Back)LIT! NYXI Gaming Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons
In this episode, we unbox and test out the NYXI Gaming Wireless Joy-Pad with 8 Colors LED For the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED offer amazing gaming experiences, both in terms of handheld and docked modes. While many love the Switch in handheld mode, I'm not a big fan myself. I've always found the Switch to be too wide, too slippery, and too uncomfortable in handheld mode, and the same goes for the Switch OLED. The team at NYXI gaming reached out and asked if we'd be up to check out their new replacement Joy-Cons for both the Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED that looks to take aim at the Hori Split Pad but raises the bar in several areas.
From the box, the Joy-Pad is considerably larger than the stock Joy-Cons, both in width and thickness. Unlike the Hori Split Pad, which can only be used while attached to the system, the Joy-Pad features integrated rechargeable batteries which allow you to use them attached to the system or detached as a pseudo-Pro Controller. This is a huge advantage over the Hori Split Pad, and something that adds extra value to the Joy-Pad.
One of the coolest features of the Joy-Pad is the integrated LED lights around the analog sticks. The left and right LEDs can be activated and changed independently, and there are 8 different colors that you can choose from. There's also what's called "Breathe" mode, where the lights slowly pulse on and off. I didn't notice right away but when you have the LEDs on, they actually get a bit brighter in the opposite direction that you push the stick. Pretty neat!
When it comes to the rumble, there are 4 intensity different levels. From the box, it is set to 50%, but you can also turn off rumble entirely, or set it to 30% or 100%. I will say that the rumble is very strong even just at 50%. I never felt the need to adjust the rumble higher or lower from the box stock setting as it felt quite good, but it is good to know that I have the option if I feel the need to change.
An issue I have found on most 3rd party Switch controllers is the lack of ability to wake the system from sleep. I can count on one hand how many 3rd party controllers actually do this, as it is fairly rare. I was pleasantly surprised when I hit the home button and my Switch and Switch OLED BOTH powered up! This is awesome and a definite advantage over other manufacturers.
Why It RoX:
- LEDs look awesome
- Wake from Sleep
- Integrated Battery
- Can be charged on the Switch
- Smooth analog sticks
- Responsive
- Assignable back triggers
- Programmable Turbo
- Bigger buttons & triggers
- Adds a D-Pad to the left JoyCon
What could be improved:
- They are massive
- Digital not analog triggers
- Only one USB-C Charging cable included
- Does not work with Amiibo
- A lot of deadband in the sticks
- Mine randomly disconnected before the 1st charge several times (but not since)
Should You Buy One?
If you are considering the Hori Split Pad Pro, you owe it to yourself to check out the NYXI Joy-Pad. It does everything that the Split Pad Pro does, but does it so much better. The biggest advantage is the integrated battery, it makes these so much more useful and versatile comparatively speaking. The LEDs are a nice addition too, but you may not see them when playing due to where you're looking. The rumble is yet another improvement over the Split Pad Pro, which doesn't offer this feature. Add in the fact that it does all these things, and more, better than the Split Pad Pro and at a better price and you get a vastly superior option. While these are a bit large for my taste, I can see others definitely trying and digging these. They are the better Split Pad option, hands-down.
