Unitek Portable Pocket Size Dock for Nintendo Switch Unboxing & Review
In this episode, we unbox & review one of, if not the, smallest portable docks for the Nintendo Switch & Switch OLED, the Unitek Portable Pocket Size Dock.
One of the greatest strengths of the Nintendo Switch is also one of its greatest annoyances. Being able to play console-quality games on the go is amazing, but needing a dock to connect it to your TV to play those console-quality games can also be a pain. It can get expensive too, as OEM Nintendo switch docks run anywhere from $60 up to $100, depending on if you get the original or the Switch OLED dock. That's where the folks from Unitek come in, not only with a very budget-friendly sub $30 doc for the Switch but perhaps one of the most portable & smallest ones we have seen to date.
The dock is simple in its design. When not in use, it's only a couple of inches tall. It's amazing how teeny tiny they were able to make a full-function dock! When you want to connect your Switch to It, all you have to do is swing the support arm around & you have a device that again is less than 6 in tall!
Unitek does not include a power supply with the dock. I'm glad to see this as it eliminates the concerns, at least for me, about out-of-spec power supplies which could damage your Switch. Simply put, if you stick with the OEM Nintendo power supply, you should not have a problem with your switch bricking. Ever. There are less expensive third-party units out there, there are ones that claim to be PD 3.0 compliant, but the safest bet is to use original equipment.
When it comes to connectivity, that's where some third-party docks fall a little flat. Some cut corners by removing USB ports, however, around the back the Unitek dock features your HDMI OUTPUT, USB-C input for power, & a USB 3.0 port. You can use this USB 3.0 port for charging accessories, connecting wired controllers, or other accessories as we will find out later. It's really nice to see this functionality added when it could have been easily removed to reduce costs.
While the Switch OLED has a beautiful kickst& reminiscent of a Microsoft Surface, the original Switch had a kickst& which was pretty pathetic. Thankfully, you can use the Unitek dock in tabletop mode to still charge your Switch & it will hold it at a good angle during gameplay. It was during the tabletop mode, however, that I noticed that the support has a bit of flex to it, & I wish it would have been slightly more reinforced. Speaking of which, on either side of the dock next to the support arm are colored & Animal Crossing colors, something very attractive. One thing I would like to see them is to exp& the line to include just a straight black version, white, & red & blue to match the different colors of the Switch & other docs that are out there.
In testing, the gameplay was flawless. The colors looked great, the sound recreation was exactly as it should be, & I did not notice any added lag or latency through It. That is a good thing as I have tested other docs that do wash the colors out a little bit or can add a little bit of delay.
Unitek does advertise this as a 4K dock, but as we all know the Switch & Switch OLED are both locked in at 1080p. However, you can actually connect some smartphones to your TV through this dock to be able to access content on your television. Samsung has their wonderful Dex application which I use every day on my tablet. I was able to connect my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ & Dex launched up immediately. I did have to remove my case as it was too thick to connect, but once I did everything worked exactly as it should. I was able to connect my wireless mouse's USB dongle to the USB 3.0 Port to navigate around the screen as well. To use a keyboard & a mouse, I can connect a USB Hub to provide additional USB ports if I need them. Overall, This was a terrific experience.
Why it RoX:
- Under $30!
- Perhaps the smallest stock I've ever tested
- Animal crossing color scheme
- USB 3.0 port
- Quality gameplay
- Works with Samsung Dex
What could be improved:
- The support arm could be more rigid & wider
- More color options
- Not usable while your Switch is in a case
Should you buy one?
With people starting to travel more & the world getting a little bit more back to normal, we are traveling a little bit more again. Then. As such, I can see people taking their Switch or Switch OLED with them on the go to decompress & occupy downtime. The Unitek portable Switch Dock worked flawlessly, & it is an amazing value for what it is offering. There are other docks that offer more USB ports, they offer network Ethernet ports, & some even have integrated Bluetooth. If you are looking for a simple dock that you can connect to a TV & play your Switch, this is an incredible value & one you should definitely consider.
