Trying Ubuntu ARM on VMWare Fusion on the M1 Max + x86 Xubuntu QEMU nested virtualization
Today I'm trying out VMWare Fusion's beta for Apple silicon on the new Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro 2021.

I install Ubuntu Linux's ARM version and then proceed to install emulated Xubuntu X86 under the m1 mac using QEMU under vmware fusion. I'm going to try natively emulating under QEMU another time, which should yield somewhat better performance.

Most open source GNU / Linux software works as intended such as the GNU Image Manipulation Program also known as GIMP, but snaps do not work. It would probably be a good idea if seriously using Linux on ARM to use a source based distro such as Gentoo.

Windows on ARM is not officially supported on VMware but is on parallels. From what I've seen other people try, it does work if you convert the VHD file, or download an ISO from a third party website. I might try that next, and see how it compares with parallels for running Windows 11 ARM on m1 max.
