A year after women's education was
suspended, many girls across the country are attending 'secret schools' - and manv others receiving home education - in defiance of the ban.

Females are forbidden from studying after the 6th grade (12 years old) - but some schools have remained open, despite the risk to student lives.

"We come here always afraid, with fear of how it will be today - but I don't want to be illiterate," one pupil told France24. Some say the rule actually motivates them to study more. "I want to do politics" said another girl, "after the Taliban came, I became more brave than before. Now I am proud of myself".
