The BEST PlayStation 4 Controler? DualSense-Style PS4 & PC Controller
In this episode, we unbox and test out the JoySky Power controller for the PlayStation 4, modeled after the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller.
Ever since I got my hands on the PlayStation 5, I've absolutely loved the DualSense controller. My initial concerns were unfounded as I found it to be extremely comfortable and capable to play with. One thing that gets to be a little weird is going back and playing PlayStation 4 games on my PlayStation 4. The Dual Shock controller has a significantly different design than the DualSense controller, and as such, it may not feel as comfortable. Well, the team at JoySky Power have sent us one of their PlayStation 4 controllers that, upon first inspection, you may mistake for a DualSense controller.
Out of the box, the controller could easily be mistaken for a DualSense controller except for a few minor details. The curves are all here, the size, the touchpad, the LED light, it's all lifted right from the DualSense controller. Instead of the PS logo for the home button, it's an actual home button. Obviously for copyright reasons that had to be changed. The triangle, circle, square, and cross buttons also have slightly different graphics in them. Finally, while the box indicates that it has adaptive triggers, I never felt them once.
Doing the blind taste tests, You really have a hard time telling which is the official Sony controller in your hand and which is the Joy Sky Power. One thing that does differentiate the two in the hand is the overall weight of the controller. The Joy Sky Power does feel like it's missing about 20% of the mass of the DualSense controller, so it will feel lighter in your hand. To utilize existing DualSense controller accessories, such as charging stands and external battery packs. They did a really good job mimicking the DualSense 5 controllers feel.
Pairing to my PlayStation 4 was super easy, all I had to do was connect a USB cable to the system and within a few seconds, it was paired. I played some of my most common games on the system with this controller, and all of them responded exactly as I would have expected. Moving over to the PlayStation 5, when I try to play PlayStation 5 games, the system gave me a message indicating that I needed a PS5 DualSense controller to play specific titles. Not unexpected, but I did have my hopes up. The gameplay felt great, and I will say the rumble is super impressive. It's not HD rumble from the Switch level, but it's still really, really good.
Why it RoX:
- Perfectly matches the DualSense 5 ergonomics
- Works with PS4, PS4 Pro, & PC
- Included USB-C cable
- Compatible with existing DualSense controller accessories
- Good speaker quality
- Reasonably priced
What could be improved:
- Lacks PS5 game compatibility.
- Springs on the analog stick felt a little firm
- Currently shows unavailable on Amazon
Should you buy one?
This is an exceptional controller for the PlayStation 4, they have done a remarkable job of duplicating the looks, feel, and most of the performance from the DualSense controller. It's comfortable, it plays well, and it utilizes the DualSense controller accessories. I will say that if you do not have a PlayStation 5. I don't know that I would replace my existing DualShock 4 controllers with these. However, if you do have a PlayStation 5 and you want to have a similar gameplay experience whether you are playing PS4 games or PS5 games, this is something worthy of the look.
