Sparks, Nevada - Police responded to an apartment on the 1600 block of Merchant Street during the evening hours of August 22, 2022 on the report of a man armed with a knife who had just stabbed his teenage son and was trying to attack his estranged wife. She told dispatchers from her neighbor's apartment she had just returned home from being out of town and her husband, who had not lived with her for three years, was trying to attack her with a knife.

Bodycam footage shows officers approach an upstairs apartment where loud yelling could be heard from a distance. When police arrived at the apartment in question, 59-year-old Francisco Pena was armed with a knife in the doorway arguing with his son. Officers told Pena multiple times to drop the knife before shooting him several times. Pena was taken to a hospital where he later died.

During the investigation police determined Pena was not only armed with the knife but also brought a loaded semi-automatic rifle to his wife's apartment.
