The Song is an Allegory for Seeking for God, as Sailing is one of the terms used to describe Meditation, and that journey thru Inner Space...and once you know this, ALL of the lyrics begin to make perfect sense, as everything that Christopher Cross wrote, explains the process of Meditation

This song has stood the 'test of time' because it is TIMELESS, as its Frequency is that of Meditation, and every time we hear this track, it transforms us back to where we once belonged...HOME, which is Heaven Upon Earth...which is Serenity...
