Gospel singer and conductor Albertina Walker was born on August 29, 1929, in the Bronzeville community of Chicago, Illinois, the youngest of eight siblings. Her father, Ruben Walker, was from Bibb County, Georgia, and her mother, Camille Coleman Walker, was from Houston County, Georgia.

She began her musical career by joining various gospel groups, including the Pete Williams Singers, Willie Webb Singers, and Robert Anderson Singers. In 1951, she formed the Caravans, which quickly became one of the most popular gospel music groups due to their beautiful vocal harmonies and strong alternating lead singers.

Walker was a prolific musician, releasing more than 60 albums during her career. In 1995, she dropped Good News in Hard Times on LLF/Warner Bros. Records. Her talent was eventually rewarded when she was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001. The following year, she was asked by President George W. Bush to perform at the White House.

Walker passed away on October 8, 2010, in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 81, due to respiratory complications.
