Police officers respond to many types of calls, but arguably the most difficult are those where infants and children have been harmed or killed. When these and other crime atrocities happen, the response is always a relentless pursuit to identify the suspects, arrest them and ensure justice for the victim.

Here is another case that demonstrates APD’s resolve in solving cases and getting dangerous individuals off the streets. On August 18th, 2022, Investigators with the Atlanta Police Department’s Fugitive Unit arrested Mr. Zion Byrd (DOB: 5/1999) and Ms. Deshan Turner. (DOB: 7/2002)

They were both taken into custody without incident and were charged with Murder and Cruelty to Children for the death of their infant child. They were transported to the Fulton County Jail without incident.

We applaud the work of our officers and investigators, the medical personnel, and the Fugitive Unit in helping to close this case and take these individuals into custody. Job well done by all. May the baby, who was denied its full life, rest in eternal peace.

Previously Released:
On 8/10/22, officers responded to 2235 Beecher Rd SW in reference to an unresponsive infant. The child was transported to the hospital where it was later pronounced deceased. Homicide investigators responded to the scene to launch their initial investigation in conjunction with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office. Further investigation revealed the child sustained injuries consistent with inflicted trauma. Investigators later established probable cause to arrest the child’s guardians, Mr. Zion Byrd and Ms. Dehshan Turner, and arrest warrants were secured.
