2. Just like the Canary Islands, the Azores Island chain contains numerous active volcanoes. The most recent of these to produce an eruption was Fayal, which famously erupted from 1957 to 1958. It first built a new island, and later joined with the mainland through extensive amounts of falling ash and lava flows. [ GeologyHub]

3. The authorities of the Azores archipelago in Portugal have installed new underwater seismographs to analyze the strong seismic activity of the island of São Jorge. The record of more than 27 earthquakes at the beginning of this year raised concern about a risk of volcanic eruption.

In March of this year an alert was generated in the archipelago; at that time Rui Marques, president of the Information and Seismic Surveillance Center of the Azores, stated that it should not be treated as a “purely tectonic crisis but as a seismic crisis occurring in an active volcanic system”.

Now, with the new underwater seismographic stations, more information is expected to be obtained within 4 months, as Marques explains:

“Is about six underwater seismic stations; that they will have a local registry, which means that the station stays at the bottom of the ocean working and recording data, and in four months it will come to the surface and they will be analysed”. [paudal.com]
