Big Lion Sniffs Guide's Boot | Viral Internet Photo Given Context

Recently a picture taken at this lion sighting has been popping up all over the internet saying the lion licked the guides boot. Lots of debate around the guide leaving his feet on display. You can see here that the guide could not move his feet until the lion lost interest, any movement could have been disastrous. You can also see that although the lion did sniff in the direction of the boot he did not make contact and certainly did not lick anything other than his own nose.
Once the lion sat down you can see the guide retreated to a safer position.
Safari vehicles often have no drivers doors so the guides can track more easily.
Lions often approach safari vehicles on hot days to utilise the shade and sudden movements during their approach, even starting the engine, can affect their behaviour so guide will wait for them to settle and then move away.
The lion shown is the Hipscar male of the Majingilane coalition a very well known lion and one the guides have spent numerous hours around so his behaviour and temperament is known.
