Pomegranate is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants that all contribute to the healing properties of this fruit. Scientists have recognized it as one of the oldest cultivated fruits, along with the olive, grape, date, palm, and fig. Pomegranate is thought to be an auspicious symbol of life, luck, abundance, and fertility. Nowadays, pomegranate is used to prevent and treat several types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases. The most abundant type of polyphenols found in its seeds is ellagitannins, which is a type of hydrolyzable tannin releasing ellagic acid, which is metabolized into urolithins such as urolithin A by gut flora. These compounds, ellagitannins, ellagic acid, and urolithins have different mechanisms of action and beneficial properties. Ellagitannins and ellagic acid are known to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth by stimulating apoptosis and inhibiting the activation of inflammatory pathways. While Urolithin A is a first-in-class natural food metabolite that promotes healthy aging by stimulating mitophagy and preventing the accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria. Pomegranate has also been suggested as a preventive measure against osteoporosis. It contains punicic acid, which is highly effective against inflammatory and oxidative processes to prevent the development or progression of osteoporosis in older adults. Due to the polyphenol-rich antioxidants of pomegranate, it could also be used to prevent cardiovascular complications through a decrease in LDL and an increase in HDL. Pomegranate extracts could also reduce macrophage oxidative stress, which is a major and direct cause of atherosclerosis.
