Immunosenescence and zinc

Beginning the sixth decade of life, the human immune system undergoes aging-related changes in which the immune system fails to protect against infections. This process is called immunosenescence. The decline of the immune system function causes chronic inflammation, which makes individuals more susceptible to chronic diseases caused by chronic inflammation such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoarthritis, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, poorer immune system function also increases the incidence and mortality of infectious diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis in aged patients. Although both the innate and the adaptive immunity undergo a decline in aging, the adaptive immunity is more affected, which makes the elderly have an altered vaccine immune response and inadequate immune response against new antigenes. This reduced stimulation to new antigens is linked to a decreased number of naive T and B cells. The naive T cells get used up in differentiation into memory lymphocyte subsets to fight against the numerous microorganisms over the course of life, thus causing a reduced number in old age. The decreased number of naive T and B cells is associated with the involution of primary lymphoid organs, especially the thymus. The thymus generates Naive T cells until teenage years and the chronic thymus involution associated with aging results in dysregulated immunity and fewer T cells output. Regarding the B cells, although the number of B cells also declines with age, there is an increase of IgA and several IgG subclasses, in addition to increased organ-specific and non-organ specific autoantibodies, which are responsible for autoimmune diseases and allergy. Dietary strategies are currently being investigated in order to identify the micronutrients that can help improve immunity and attenuate chronic immunity in the elderly. One of which is zinc supplementation. Zinc has been shown to play an essential role in regulating immunity. It has been shown to increase thymic mass and prevent thymic involution in the elderly. Several studies have demonstrated that zinc supplementation to the elderly leads to a reduced incidence of infections and an increased proportion of T cells. Zinc supplementation has also been shown to normalize immune function at a cellular level, preventing the activation of unnecessary inflammation.
