L-arginine is an amino acid that is used in making proteins. It is a metabolically versatile amino acid, serving as a precursor for the synthesis of proteins and other amino acids like proline. During wound healing, L-arginine supplementation can accelerate wound healing process, as it is used in the synthesis of proline, an amino acid present in collagen, which is required for successful wound healing process. Moreover, once L-arginine enters the body, it is converted into nitric oxide in immune and endothelial cells. For the synthesis of nitric oxide, arginine serves as the substrate for the enzyme nitric oxide synthase, an enzyme found in the heart, brain, lung, immune cells, and vascular endothelium. Nitric oxide produced in the vascular endothelium serves as a homeostatic regulator of numerous essential cardiovascular functions. It keeps the blood vessel dilated and controls blood pressure. It also inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion to the vascular wall to prevent thrombosis when released towards the vascular lumen. L-arginine is also used by immune cells to produce nitric oxide in which it acts as a key modulator in regulating the innate and adaptive immune response. It exhibits either acts as an anti-inflammatory or pro-inflammatory agent. L-arginine prevents pre-eclampsia during pregnancy. During pregnancy, L-arginine concentration tends to be reduced, but women with pre-eclampsia have lower levels of this amino acid. L-arginine increases endothelial nitric oxide production and improves blood flow in the umbilical artery, which promotes intrauterine growth of the fetus.
