PINEAL GLAND -- melatonin | calcification | AGING | BRAIN INFLAMMATION

Deep inside your brain lies a small gland, called the pineal gland. This gland produces melatonin as a signaling hormone that is associated with circadian and seasonal rhythm and acts as a protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecule. But the primary function of pineal melatonin is to signal other organs to rest at night. In response to darkness, the pineal gland synthesizes and releases melatonin, which can penetrate all the organs. Unfortunately, the pineal gland has the highest rate of developing calcification, which varies by country and age. Studies have found that the calcification of the pineal gland disrupts physiological melatonin production and seems to directly influence the development of neurodegenerative diseases and aging. Moreover, it has been reported that the morphology of the pineal glands is altered by several physiological or pathological conditions. Pineal glands of patients with Alzheimer's disease have been found to be significantly smaller and release a lesser concentration of melatonin. Decreased endogenous melatonin leads to the accumulation of oxidative stress and brain inflammation, which are the underlying conditions of Alzheimer's disease. There is a study reporting that fluoride is associated with pineal calcification and fluoride-free diet can help rejuvenate the pineal gland. However, more studies are needed to further understand what really causes pineal calcification.
