Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays an important role in various cellular processes, including thyroid function, reproduction, and DNA repair system. There are studies reporting that selenium has anticarcinogenic properties through different mechanisms, including ROS production, thiol modification, and DNA repair, however, there are also studies that are relatively conflicting. Selenium is also involved in boosting the immune system and directly improving the immune response against viral infections. It is incorporated into proteins, called selenoproteins, that are involved in cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and activation of innate and adaptive immune cells. The importance of selenium in immunity is evidenced in individuals that are deficient with this mineral. Studies in mouse models have reported that the influenza A virus, which is a type of coronavirus, has increased genomic RNA mutation resulting from selenium deficiency. Genomic mutations can cause the virus to evade the immune system's defense mechanism, these lead to the alteration of proteins or antigens expressed on the surface of the virus. As a result, antibodies produced by the B cells against the original virus strain do not work against the new one and the duration of the infection may last longer before it subsides. Adequate selenium intake enhances T cell proliferation, NK cell activity, and innate immune cell functions. In a study, the specific cell-mediated response to vaccination with poliovirus antigen was evaluated in the selenium supplemented group and placebo group. On day 7, it was observed that the proliferative responses of the supplemented group were significantly greater than the proliferative response of the placebo group.
