Apigenin is a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables, especially in parsley, chamomile, and artichokes. Recently, it has been found to inhibit CD38, which may ameliorate age-related diseases and metabolic and physiological functions. CD38 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed primarily on the surface of lymphoid cells, but also in immune cells and in other tissues. CD38 has been reported to play an essential role in the regulation of NAD metabolism. NAD is a central metabolite that is used by various regulatory enzymes, involved in energy metabolism and mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. NAD also has distinct roles in ageing. Increased CD38 activity has been shown to decreased intracellular NAD levels. Decreased NAD levels can result in mitochondrial dysfunction, and tissue and DNA damages. Moreover, it is associated with various types of age-related diseases and metabolic dysfunctions. CD38 activity increases with aging, and this is associated with reduced levels of NAD, mitochondrial dysfunction and tissue damages. Recent researches have evidenced that CD38 inhibition preserves NAD levels, which enhances energy metabolism and improves several physiological processes.
